This is a public "diary" of a family whose little girl started a battle with inoperable cancer in April 2005. In December 2007 our house burned down. And in September 2009 Mommy was diagnosed with a terminal disease (a genetic form of ALS) that took her to Heaven in July, 2011, leaving Daddy and two young girls to make it on their own. Over several years of ups and downs, you will get into our hearts, minds and souls as we share joys and sorrows. It can sometimes be very difficult to read. We hope it is also uplifting. Please find joy in what you read here.

Life has been hectic

Sorry it has been so long since we've posted. Life continues to be pretty hectic. We had a family gathering at our house over the July 4th weekend. Several families camped for the weekend and we had a big party on the 5th to celebrate Grandma M's birthday as well as Mommy's birthday.

I have to tell you a story about Sarah. She has decided that the american flag is Mommy's birthday flag. Any time now that she sees one, she points it out and says "Mommy's birthday flag. Happy Birthday Mommy." Somewhere over the weekend, she decided that the flag was for Mommy's birthday (which is on the 4th) and it has stuck.

Mid July, we went camping with NAFA (Northwest Adoptive Families Association). We try to make it to their campout every year. We enjoy the families and the break from the routine. Going camping, however, meant that we had to get the camping trailer converted back to a camping trailer from a temporary office. Thas wasn't an easy task. It was a fun weekend!

Then Daddy took a little vacation last weekend. A group of friends was gathering in Kentucky and we wanted to say thank you in person to those who have really helped us out over the last couple of years, especially since the fire. He enjoyed meeting many of the friends, but he missed being with the rest of the family. And we missed him, too.

The month of July brought "summer school" for both Rebekah (June 23 - July 23) and Sarah (July 9, 16 and 23). They both seemed to enjoy that.

We are continuing with speech therapy twice a week. Well for another week and a half, anyway. Then our speech therapist is taking a new position and won't be able to see us any longer. We'll have to wait until she is replaced and we can get Sarah onto her schedule. Rebekah's therapy was set to end before she goes back to school, so she is just ending a little earlier. The therapy center we use focuses on preschool age children, but they kept Rebekah on for her Kindergarten year.

Tomorrow, the girls have regularly scheduled dental appointments. Rebekah has one tooth that is a little loose. As I was flossing her teeth tonight, I realized that two of her permanent teeth (molars) have broken through. I had to go look at a tooth schedule to see if it was normal for these to come in before she's lost any. I found out that was typical, so I felt a little better about that. Now I need to see the molars on the left come in. I'll feel much better once I've seen that happen. The left side of her jaw received a lot of radiation, so we know that there may be issues with the teeth on that side of her face. At this point, we have to wait and see. One more thing to discuss with the dentist tomorrow.

We are working on getting August scans set up. It is that time again. As always, there is a little anxiety with that.

The girls have been doing very well with potty training. We are at the point that we have mostly dry days with an accident here or there. Sarah has even been doing well at night, too. Rebekah wakes up wet most mornings. Both girls are wearing pullups (or diapers) at night and underwear during the day. Right now, I'm trying to deplete my supply of pullups and diapers. I don't want to buy too many and then not use them.

Mommy took the girls to Toys-R-Us to pick out some toys because they had been doing so well with the potty training. They wanted some doctor kits and some Dora purses with cell phone, bracelet, comb and earrings. They also picked out some new dora backpacks for school and dora lunch bags, too. And they got to pick out some new underwear, too. They were so excited to get to pick out some "prizes". Thanks to some of our friends who sent us toys-r-us gift cards, we were able to purchase these prizes.

We have truly been blessed by so many people. Without the support of our friends and family, we would struggle to get through all of this. Support comes in so many ways and we are thankful for all of it.

Thank you sooooo much for posting an update. I pray for Rebekah every day and it's good to hear that your absence was due to busyness and nothing else. God bless you!

So good to hear from you! I check everyday and was beginning to feel concerned. Good to hear that all is okay. I know the feeling of hectic -- I can't figure out where this summer has gone!

Hugs to both girls!

I heard this song and video, and thought of you and all the cancer kid parents who deserve a letter from the child who cannot yet thank them for everything.

ErinAnnie - thank you for the thoughts. I listened to the recording of the little boy Tyson on YouTube talking about the fight. Then I went and listened to the song on their blog and saw pictures of Tyson with them last week. Then I saw that Tyson died two days ago and the tears that were already flowing took over.

Just to clarify, the correct url for the song is:

-Scott (Rebekah's Daddy)
